The plaque reads, “Commemorating the Centennial of the country’s favorite anthem... ‘America the Beautiful’ While on a tour of the western United States, educator and author Katharine Lee Bates (1859–1929) climbed into a ‘prairie wagon’ on July 22, 1893 which made its way slowly to the top of snow-capped Pikes Peak. Upon her arrival to the 14,110 foot summit, she gazed out over the vast expanse of the grasslands against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Inspired by the magnificent view, Ms. Bates penned that day the timeless words of ‘America the Beautiful.’”
